There are some simple tasks you can carry out to keep your heating system in tip-top condition, below you will find some hints and tips to help you on the way.
1. Check the pressure
If you have a combination boiler or system boiler, check the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler. Check the needle is between 1-1.5 bar. If the pressure is lower than 1 bar top up using filling device. (Refer to boiler manual)
2. Header tank
If you have tanks in the loft, check the small tank which is the heating top up tank that it has water in it and operate ball valve.
3. Check the radiators
If your radiators are cold at the top this will indicate that the radiator has air in it. This will have an effect on the heat output of radiator. Using a vent key and a cloth to collect any water, vent the radiator till water appears at radiator vent. NOTE only slacken vent slightly DO NOT remove vent screw completely.
4. Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRV’s)
During summer months open your thermostatic radiator valves to maximum, to prevent sticking.
5. During summer months operate heating briefly to prevent seizing of heating components.
Finally, it is advised to have your boiler and heating system serviced annually by a registered GAS SAFE REGISTER operative to maintain your boiler efficiency and help to prevent possible damage to system components.
